This project, located adjacent to Ashfield railway station, involved an upgrade of existing amenities, converting it into a publicly available unisex accessible facility and a baby change and an ambulant toilet for use by bus drivers.
The design responds to the existing masonry wall defining the edge of the railway platform. The new metal wall adds another layer over this and the facilities are housed between the two walls.
The place is busy throughout the day, functioning primarily as a transport exchange, with bus passengers transferring constantly. In completely remodelling the building, the new building increases the footpath width to give safer access for pedestrians. A brightly coloured awning shelters those who wait for buses. A lean rail provides some support at a location with insufficient space for seating.
The exterior of the building is deliberately modest and coloured to respond to the existing palatte of brickwork and concrete surrounding. The accent colours of awning and downpipe provide highlights and refer to the interior tiled spaces.
